The President of the United States
takes pleasure in presenting the
SILVER STAR MEDAL to
LANCE CORPORAL MARVIN R. STEWART
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS
For
service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in
action while serving as a Squad Leader with Company L, Third Battalion, Third
Marines, Third Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy
in the Republic of Vietnam. On the afternoon of 26 January 1969, Company L was moving
to a new patrol base in the Dong Ha area when the Marines came under intense
hostile automatic weapons fire, pinning down the lead element and wounding several
men. Observing the casualties lying in
an area dangerously exposed to enemy fire, Lance Corporal Stewart unhesitatingly
exposed himself to the hostile fire as he fearlessly maneuvered across the
fire-swept terrain to reach his injured comrades. With complete disregard for his own safety, he ignored the enemy
round impacting nearly as he carried one of the casualties to relative
safety. He subsequently returned to the
hazardous zone two additional times and moved two more injured men to cover
despite having to pass through an area only ten meters from the hostile position
during the third trip. His heroic and
time actions inspired all who observed him and were responsible for saving the
lives of three wounded Marines. By his
courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty in the face of great personal
danger, Lance Corporal Stewart upheld the highest traditions of the Marine
Corps and the United States Naval Service."
