conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a
Grenadier with Company M, Third Battalion, Third Marines, Third Marine
Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of
Vietnam. On 10 November 1968, Company M was participating in a search and
destroy operation west of Con Thien when the Marines came under an intense
hostile rocket attack, during which Lance Corporal Myers was seriously
wounded. As he and the other injured men were being prepared for medical
evacuation, he alertly discovered a smoking mortar round lying in their
midst. Reacting instantly, he ignored his painful wounds and unhesitatingly
picked up the red-hot mortar round. Completely disregarding his own safety,
he then fearlessly carried it a safe distance from his comrades. His heroic
and timely actions resulted in severe burns to his hands, but saved his
companions from additional serious injury or possible death. By his
courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty in the face of great
personal danger, Lance Corporal Myers inspired all who observed him and
upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States
Naval Service.
