For
conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Platoon
Commander with Company K, Third Battalion, Third Marines, Third Marine
Division, Fleet Marine Force Pacific in Quang Ngai Province, Republic of
Vietnam. On the morning of 18 August 1965, during Operation Starlite, the
second and third platoons of Company K came under heavy automatic weapons
fire. The second platoon, commanded by First Lieutenant Hinson, immediately
sustained casualties. Due to the intensity of enemy fire, two of First
Lieutenant Hinson’s squads were pinned down. After he reported the
situation to the Company commander, First Lieutenant Hinson aggressively
led an assault with his remaining squad through the enemy positions. As a
result of his immediate and fearless action in the face of heavy enemy
fire, the company’s first platoon was able to advance and clear the left
flank of the objective, thereby forcing the enemy to withdraw. By his
courageous leadership and loyal devotion to duty, First Lieutenant Hinson
upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States
Naval Service.
