In August, 1965 after 3 months in country, 3/3 participated in the first major battle of VietNam near Chu Lai. This was known as Operation Starlite, and was the first of many
costly battles the Battalion would face in the ensuing four+ years.
In all, 550 Marines and Corpsmen in 3/3 gave their lives in service to their nation.
Over 2,900 more were wounded during the period.
